Badger Burrow Characteristics

How to identify a badger burrow:

  • Burrows appear slightly elliptical or round in shape.

  • On average, size of the burrow entrance is 24 cm wide and 20 cm high.

  • Can have distinct horizontal claw marks in the sides of the burrow (often up to 1.5 cm between claw marks) and it is sometimes possible to find badger hairs at the entrance or in the soil that has been excavated.

  • An obvious mound of soil, or “burrow mound”, found at the entrance is quite noticeable and can be up to 2 meters in length.

  • Coyote and fox burrows are often taller, or rectangular, in shape vs the rounder shape of a badger burrow.
